A Fairy
Tale
Factory.
A
TV Concept??
by
Asbjorn Lonvig
Kids'
Fairy Tale Factory is a
Fairy Tale Theater.
The purpose of a fairy tale factory is to prompt kids to tell fairy
tales.
To urge kids to tell fairy tales of their own.
It is a puppet theater, too.
A very simple puppet theater.
The main puppets are cardboard fairy tale characters from Asbjorn
Lonvig's fairy tales - see children's books online.

Here the
front of the puppet theater is decorated with dots from Tall-Charlie,
who is a giraffe.
So is the stage.

You can turn the front around and this side is decorated with stripes
from the Prison Horse.
If you turn the
stage upside down...
If you place the front on a high table and remove the stage you have a
Fairy Tale Theater for
finger puppets and hand puppets.
Why prompt kids to
tell fairy tales.
Grown ups believe
they are good at fairy tales.
They sure are, but kids are better.
Telling fairy tales develop kids' imagination.
Telling fairy tales develop kids' ability to communicate.
Telling fairy tales
develop......
The Concept
1. Three kids and a grown up make their own Fairy Tale
Theater
The front and the stage is cut out of a 3 mm (0.12") plate of
cardboard, size 75 x 66,1 cm (29.5 x
26.0").
The stage (50 x 50 cm - 19.7 x 19.7") is the hole in the front.
Cut the hole and leave 12,5 cm (4.9") to the upper, the left and
the right front pieces.
Leave 3,6 cm (1.4") to the lower front piece.
Two red feet 3,3 x 3,3 x 15 cm (1.3 x 1.3 x 5.9") balance the
front.
Cut two small pieces
out of the cardboard - 3,3 x 1,8 cm (1.3 x 0.7") - like
this:

Saw a groove of a
little less than 3 mm (0.12") in the middle of the
red feet - depth 1,8 cm (0.7") - like this:

Assemble the front and the two red feet with glue.
Two sticks 3,3 x 3,3 x 45 cm (1.3 x 1.3 x 17.7") is placed
underneath the stage.
That's all folks!
2. download puppets
Now download the
fairy tale puppets.
Here - in a
Word Document in coulors.
Here - in
another Word Document if you want to color them yourself.
(send an e-mail if you want more
fairy tale
puppets for download).
Print them.
Place them on cardboard and glue them.
Cut them out and leave a foot of cardboard - like this:

Saw out small bricks of wood (1,5 x 2,5 x 5 cm -
0.6 x 1 x 2")
and saw a tiny groove
for the cardboard
foot - like
this:
See some
of the puppets:

Bernhard
Sleep-Sheep
Tall-Charlie
Prison-Horse
Belinda
Mr. Tiger
Penguin Blue
All my fairy tale
characters (see children's
books online) are potetial fairy
tale puppets.
(In stead
of sawing out small bricks of wood you might use wooden grill sticks,
which you fasten on the back of the puppets using strong tape.)
3. TV Studio Design

The Fairy Tale Theater i placed in
the front of a 80 x 80 cm (31.5 x 31.5") table
It is a white table - it has no function but to be the center of the
fairy tale factory - it must not attract any attention.

3 red chairs are placed around the white
table for the 3 kids.
One kid at each side and one opposite to the front of the theater.
The chairs are red to attract attention.
It's important that the 3 kids are sitting down.
A grown up sits
next to the walls below - to the right.
The grown up tells the kids about a few rules in the fairy tale factory.
Don't fight too much.
Don't swear too much.
Don't be too violent.
Remember why you have two ears and one mouth!
And similar.

Two walls like this are placed behind the
white table and red chairs.
They are 202 x 192 cm (79.5 x 75.6").
One wall for suggestions from the TV viewing kids for further fairy
tale
development.
One wall for suggestions from TV viewing kids to new fairy tale puppets.
The grown up tells the 3 kids about suggested fairy tale
developments and suggested fairy tale puppets.
The grown up keeps himself in the background - in any sense.
His duty is to supervise that the fairy tale factory is functioning
smoothly.
He, however, might inter ween if things take a wrong direction.
3. Music
Each fairy tale character has its own tune. A
very simple, but unique tune.
My friend Carsten Thomsen, who is an organist and who has helped me
playing Beatles Music on church organ at art events, is a composer too.
When I place one of my art works on the music rest of my piano, Carsten
simply plays my art work!!
I give Carsten a few instructions, I place "Bernhard" on the music rest
of my piano - and hocus
pocus - the
music is there.
It is disturbing to the kids to play music
during the fairy tale telling.
The music is added afterwards.
If you think, that each fairy tales characters' music is not
sufficienly unique,
just blow a trumpet, when it is Bernhard talking,
just play a clarinet
when it is Tall-Charlie talking,
just play a saxophone, when it
is Mr. Tiger talking.
Etc.
Nothing loud.
Just supporting the fairy tale telling.
Gently.
Sincerely
yours,
