Asbjorn Lonvig's words: Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Kyoto, Japan is a temple made of gold. I saw a lot of temples in Kyoto in Japan. Kyoto is the city in Japan with far most temples.
The temples were amazing.
But.
Just one was made of gold.
I had to make a motif.
I took some photos in order to remember the shape of the Golden Pavilion.
I do not know why, but I was not ready to make the motif until 18 years after I saw it in Japan.
I’m sure the starting point 18 years after was a renewed interest in Zen and Buddhism.
I looked at my photos from 1991.
The photos were not right to me. The angels were wrong. Everything was wrong.
I searched on the Internet.
I searched the phrase “golden pavilion”
And I found 990 pictures.
Not one of them were usable.

But.
I had a crazy idea.
In Legoland in Billund, Denmark there is section about Japan with all the symbols of Japan:
A temple, a sea with a temple portal,
Shinkansen (the super fast train), Fujiyama,
a Japanese city etc. etc.
And of course the Golden Pavilion. I went to Legoland and in a few minutes I had photos of the Golden Pavilion, exactly as I wanted them.
I was ready to create.
I suddenly remembered everything about the Golden Pavilion.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: Inspired by the movie Babel. The Babel legend. Babel portrays multiple stories taking place in Morocco, Japan, Mexico and the United States. Visual art is the language.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. It straddles the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures just west of Tokyo, from where it can be seen on a clear day.
It is located near the Pacific coast of central Honshk. Three small cities surround it, they are: Gotemba (East), Fuji-Yoshida (North) and Fujinomiya (Southwest). Mount Fuji maintains a snow cap year round even though it is in a temperate climate zone.
Mount Fuji is a well-known symbol of Japan and is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.
I was there.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: "Gateway to Life" is inspired by a portal of a temple in Tokyo. Zen-Buddhism is not easy to comprehend by people from the West.
However C. G. Jung’s openness and genuine interest in foreign cultures has revealed to me a depth that occasionally allow me to catch a glimpse of rare profoundness in the Zen. This portal probably a portal to a Zen Buddhist Temple.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: The portrait "Confucius" is inspired by a sculpture, not the sculpture in Qufuthat is “the official likeness“ of Confucius. There are of course no pictures showing what he looked like 500 BCE, but I found a sculpture that expressed his ideas. Confucius, 551 BCE - 479 BCE, was a Chinese thinker and philosopher, whose teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced thought and life of the far East. His philosophy emphasized morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over Taoism during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). Confucius' thoughts shortly is called Confucianism. It was introduced to Europe by the Jesuit Matteo Ricci, who Latinate his name as "Confucius." His teachings may be found in the Analects of Confucius, a collection of "brief aphoristic fragments", which was compiled many years after his death.
Some of Confucius' quotes:
"Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it."
"Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses."
“Ignorance is the night of the mind, but a night without moon and star."
"It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop."
"Men's natures are alike, it is their habits that carry them far apart."
"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do."
"Respect yourself and others will respect you."
"Study the past if you would define the future."

A sculpture of Confucius (to the right) was unveiled 2006 by the China Confucius Foundation in Qufu, east China’s Shandong province. It was meant to be the "official likeness" of Confucius.
In my opinion this portrait/sculpture has no resemblance to Confucius at all and never could represent his philosophy what soever.
This man expresses arrogance, self insufficiency, narrow mindedness etc. He is old and he looks ill. No, it is not Confucius.

That's why the point of departure for my work is another statue. A stature (to the left) that matches the way I percept the whole Confucius.
This Confucius is expresses humility, all-embracing warmheartedness,
superiority, wisdom etc. He is old but well.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: "Shaghai Sunshine" is inspired by the island Pudong. Pudong, officially known as Pudong New Area, is a district of Shanghai, China that enjoys sub-provincial administrative status.
It is named "Pudong" because of its location on the east side of the Huangpu river, on the opposite of Puxi, the west side.
After its merger with Nanhui District (now defunct) in May 2009, the Pudong New Area comprises the majority of land in eastern Shanghai.
Since the beginning of its development in 1990 when plans were first announced, Pudong has become a New Open Economic Development Zone,
and has emerged as China's financial and commercial hub.
Pudong is home to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and a skyline that includes the symbolic Oriental Pearl Tower,
the Jin Mao Building, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the under-construction Shanghai Tower, reflective of Shanghai and China's rapid economic
development.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: "The Wild Goose Pagoda" is inspired by a visit to the Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian, China. Outside the Wild Goose Pagoda I had this experience of being a foreigner.
To have another cultural background. To meet people with another cultural background.
Jakob - my youngest son - was 9 years of age. His hear was blond. Crew cut.
I was big. With a red blond bird.
The Chinese crowded around us. Friendly. Smiling. Standing with their bikes.
They wanted to touch Jakob.
The talk among us foreigners suddenly had a new subject, what do the Chinese think about our traveling in China. One of my fellow-
foreigners told me, that the Chinese wondered why
we did not stay at home, save the money and buy a bike.
Or a refrigerator?"

I have put an extra store or more on the Wild Goose Pagoda motif.
A nice munk inside the pagoda and the crowd outside made me believe Chinese are closer to divinity.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: "Temple of Langhua" is inspired by the the Longhua Temple in Shanghai. The Longhua Temple was originally built in 247 AD, it is the largest temple in the city of Shanghai. It is a Buddhist Temple. The Longhua Temple complex is often crowded with devotees bringing incense to the Buddha images. In the spring, it also fills with admirers of the temple's famous peach blossoms. Usually you would concentrate upon the Longhua Pagoda (977). It is a 8 story tower. Unfortunately the 10th-century pagoda was not open to visitors due to its age and fragility.
The "Temple of Langhua" was open to visitors.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: "The Great Wall of China" is inspired by walking on the Great Wall of China.
The Great Wall of China was built over 2,200 years ago, by the first emperor of China
In Chinese the wall is called "Wan-Li Qang-Qeng" which means 10,000-Li Long Wall  - 10,000 Li is about 5,000 km.
Through Western contact with China from the 17th through 20th centuries, the legend of the Great Wall of China grew along with tourism to the wall. Restoration and rebuilding took place in the 20th century and in 1987 the Great Wall of China was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, a portion of the Great Wall of China about 50 miles (80 km) from Beijing receives thousands of tourists each day.
The myth of being able to see the Great Wall from space originated in Richard Halliburton's book Second Book of Marvels (
1938 - long before humans saw the earth from space) said that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from the moon.
The Great Wall of China certainly isn't visible from the Moon.
It's a legend.
Alan Bean, Apollo 12 astronaut: "The only thing you can see from the moon is a beautiful sphere of the earth.....".
UNESCO's words: In c. 220 B.C., under Qin Shi Huang, sections of earlier fortifications were joined together to form a united defence system against invasions from the north. Construction continued up to the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), when the Great Wall became the world's largest military structure. Its historic and strategic importance is matched only by its architectural significance.

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: For a long time I have known that some day I had to make a motif of Taj Mahal. I have focused on not only the shape and colors on the ground, but also the mirror image in the water in front of the building. I have worked with the motif in different color schemes in order to find the one that in the best way live up to my colorful simplicity dogmas.
My number one on my "had to make" list was the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Japan. As this had been finished I worked for a considerable amount of time on the Taj Mahal motifs

Asbjorn Lonvig's words: "Mount Everest Blue" is inspired by the mystery of Mount Everest in Himalayas in Nepal, Asia. In the "Green" (spring?) version you meet a not very dangerous mountain.
By changing colors
- see the "Blue" (winter?) version - however you might understand the troubles of the mountaineers that try to climb Mount Everest. Dangers such as altitude sickness, weather and wind.
If a mountaineer climbs higher than 8.000 meters he enters the Death Zone.
In the Death Zone corps are not rescued, they remain on the mountain - it is very dangerous to bring them down to sea level.

Dear Asbjorn Lonvig,
The Staff at ARTROM Gallery has met to view your images.
We have also visited your websites and entered immediately into your world.
We are impressed with your ability to simplify a concept into an image and concentrate it,
to incude only what is necessary. In evaluating your work for its strong graphic content, we  became aware of the size of the originals; they are all quite large and are acrylic on canvas.
In viewing your works we discussed not only their graphic content, but discussed them as paintings, as objects unto themselves. Knowing that the images exist somewhere as objects of that dimension is far different than looking at images stored in some computer, regardless of how they were created. One can appreciate the graphic illustrative/informative quality of an image on a computer screen, but it stops there, until you know more about the image as it exists in "real life",
and this adds another dimension to the work. It also adds credibility to the commitment the artist has made to the image.
We feel that you believe in your commitment as an artist.
This is one of the aspects we look for in our GUILD Members.
When one believes in himself the message is clear.  We are also interested in your "Manifesto" below.
"It's about the fact that the art market is predicted to grow 3,5 times because of the Internet.
It's about my decision to stake everything on the internet.
It's about concentrating my efforts on the internet when it comes to sales.
It's about my decision to make new standards and challenge art traditions by
making my drafts on a computer and exhibit the drafts.
And insist upon that a computer is nothing but a new tool.
And insist upon that using a computer is as worthy as not doing it!!!
Worthier????"
We would like to help you accomplish these things, and welcome you to
become a member of AGG.
